Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil 6 – News

The Resident Evil (RE) series of games has been with us since 1996 and has been an almost constant success story since that time. The releases of RE on various platforms has sold over 40 million units since its debut.  Capcom can surely take pride in what has been a great commercial success and a delight to gamers all over the world.  The world of computer gaming does not stand still however and now possibly the most frequently asked question is: “When will there be a Resident Evil 6?

In order to answer this question we first need to look at the events surrounding the current edition of the game.  Resident Evil 5 received a lukewarm response from game reviewers although the game itself was the most financially successful in the series to date.  Unfortunately for Capcom Shinji Mikami, the original creator of the series, left the company in 2007.  The producer that took over from him, Jun Takeuchi, spoke of feeling “extreme pressure” following in Mikami’s shadow and no doubt that pressure only increased with the mixed reviews the fifth release of the game received.  While some fans might be cheered to hear it Takeuchi has effectively ruled himself out of producing a future Resident Evil 6 stating that he would only do so after “two Olympics had passed”.  For most gamers, this comment translates as “never”.

Jun Takeuchi - Producer of Resident Evil 5Assuming that Takeuchi is serious about his delay before wanting to get involved in the development of another in the Resident Evil series then this leaves the field open for a new producer to take up the mantle.  The reason for this is simply that Capcom must surely be as eager as fans of the game themselves to see a new release and waiting eight years for a sequel is just not a serious option.

So what kind of game will Resident Evil 6 be?  Fans of the early games would no doubt be happiest to see it stay as an atmospheric third person horror/survival shooter.  More bloodthirsty fans might like the current direction with more guns and action and less role playing style elements.  The only problem with this direction is the cool reception it has already received and it is unlikely that a company as successful as Capcom will be keen to go against fans interests.  The fans are paying customers after all.

Resident Evil 6 – New Directions

So what kind of game will Resident Evil 6 be? It is highly likely to be an online game as this format has already been tried and has proved to be successful.  Will we see new 3d graphics?  Perhaps this is most likely to be decided by the success or failure of the new format in cinemas and already scheduled games than any direct decision by Capcom.  While fans would most likely want to see a return to a more RPG game style of play rather than a shooter style the only ones who know for sure what a future Resident Evil 6 will look like are Capcom themselves and they just aren’t saying.

Are Text Based RPG Games Dead?

Text Based RPG Games Past and Present

In the early days of computing the only type of RPG game available was text based.  Yes folks, no animated graphics, just a screen of text and a few choices to choose between.  One of the most successful text based rpg games was a game called “The Hobbit”.  I played this on a ZX Spectrum with a (then) massive 48k of memory!  Don’t laugh…

Playing the Hobbit was at times incredibly frustrating as you needed to know the exact command in order to complete and action.  Today, with better understanding of how to program for synonym interpretation, I was curious to see if modern games were any better.

Anyway, recently I went looking around the internet to see if any of these text based rpg games still existed and if so in what form?

Well, the answer kind of surprised me.  I thought that in an age where spellbinding graphics are common, that the attraction of text based rpg games would have waned.  I was wrong.  There are literally hundreds of text based browser games out there, with millions of players.

Here I have selected one of the best text based games I have found so far.  Once I have had a chance to sample the rest I will review them all and let you know what I think.

Omerta

text-based-rpg-games-omertaOne of the most popular online text based rpg games is Omerta.  The game boasts nearly 4 million registered accounts with several thousand players online at most times of the day or night as the player base is truly global.

The game is based in the gangster world of the 1930’s and offers the player a chance to participate in a mafia family.  The game starts in either Italy or America but there are opportunities to diversify as the game progresses.  While the content is definitely adult, there is no truly graphic content and so the game can just as easily be played by a younger child as well as an older audience providing there is no objection to the overall theme of the game.

The game’s homepage states that Omerta is:

Set in the 1930′s gangster and mafia world, the game is all about status, money and respect. Players get rank points by doing crimes, stealing cars and busting friends out of jail. You can even run you’re own organised crime ring, robbing local banks and holding up cars on quiet roads. As you delve deeper into the dark gangster world, many players find other business opportunities, such as gambling clubs, reselling booze and even drug dealing.

If watching the Godfather, Scarface, or The Departed is your kind of entertainment then this game is definitely for you!  The game actually goes further than many movies in that not only can you have bodyguards and fast cars, but there is also options to wear bulletproof suits and other protections.  Something that the characters in these movies could definitely have used!

If you fancy trying your hand at being a gangster or just want to experience what text based rpg games have to offer then you could do worse than to try Omerta.  Play is 100% free, so there is nothing to lose.  Try it now.

Guild Wars

Guild Wars

I hate to admit it, but Guild Wars was recommended to me years ago and I avoided it at the time. My time was taken up with another MMO designed by Cryptic Studios and after my experiences of online games that do not charge ongoing monthly fees I was loathe to explore Guild Wars at all.

That decision was a mistake, as the game is a real gem.

The Guild Wars advertising blurb on their website states that the game has over 4 million players. Assuming this is correct it is approximately one third the size of the Warcraft player base, but this is hardly a problem. I am sure you will find many players to game with. Server populations are reasonable and unlike Warcraft I have not encountered long wait times to log in.

Although Guild Wars is an online game it does not charge ongoing monthly fees.  Once you buy the game, that is it.  Play as long as you like, as often as you like.

Guild Wars Expansion Packs

Is it too good to be true; an online game that charges no monthly fees?  Well, yes and no.  A software company has to make money somehow and Cryptic Studios are no different.

The difference, for the player, is that charges are only incurred if you buy a new expansion pack.  This makes costs controllable, which is no bad thing.

As these expansions age the price of them drops.  The picture link here is for a pack of Guild Wars products for the PC (Guild Wars Trilogy) at a very reasonable price and will get you a great start in a fun game.

Here is what Amazon has to say about Guild Wars Trilogy:

Step into Guild Wars, the award-winning fantasy online role-playing game enjoyed by millions of players. For the first time ever, Guild Wars Trilogy combines Guild Wars, Factions, and Nightfall into a single amazing experience. Begin in Guild Wars on the continent of Tyria where the human kingdoms are under attack by the vicious Charr. Journey on to the ancient continent of Cantha in Factions, a land torn apart by political strife, and threatened by the restless spirit of a long-dead traitor. Lastly, explore exotic Elona in Nightfall, where players must do battle against a god to save the land from descending into eternal night.

Sound interesting?  It should.  Guild Wars is a great game.

There are of course other content packs available and I will review them as I come across them, along with Guild Wars 2 which is currently in development.

Conflagrant.
